Business Insider listed me as one of the top 30 Leaders Transforming the Future of Healthcare in August 2019. It was an honor to be included alongside so many people I admire. The recognition came with an opportunity to contribute to a series of articles with recommendations and advice from all the leaders.

How to make an impact
In a follow-on article, each leader offered their advice for young people who want to disrupt the US’s $3.5 trillion healthcare industry. Here was my advice:
Blythe Adamson, the 34-year-old senior quantitative scientist at Flatiron Health, said that having a mentor with integrity can help young scientists navigate tricky situations. “I think especially for those of us who are on the cutting edge, pioneering something new, we are constantly having to grow and use and have our biomedical research integrity challenged,” Adamson said. Adamson’s mentor is Lou Garrison, a health economist and professor emeritus at the University of Washington.

Here are great pieces of advice from others on the list:
- ‘Pursue the passions that are deep and personal.’ – Chris Esguerra, senior medical director of Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan and a psychiatrist
- ‘Don’t reinvent the wheel.’ – Kimber Lockhart, chief technology officer of primary care clinic operator One Medical.
- ‘Instead of providing answers, learn to facilitate discussion.’ – Gerren Wilson, head of patient partnerships at Roche’s Genentech

My book recommendations for leaders in the health tech industry
The last article in the series had leaders recommended the best books to read for someone who wants to be part of disrupting healthcare. I recommend reading “Rigor Mortis: How Sloppy Science Creates Worthless Cures, Crushes Hope, and Wastes Billions” by Richard Harris. My full review of this book describes why the lessons described are essential for the next generation of data scientists to understand.
I also highly recommended reading “Bad Blood” by John Carreyrou. This book was mentioned by a few of the leaders on the Business Insider list.
